How do I know whether you need angled, corner or straight radiator valves for your radiator?

Match the valve shape to how the pipes enter the radiator: angled valves suit side-inlet radiators with pipes coming from below or bottom-inlet radiators with pipes coming from the wall; corner valves work where pipework comes from the wall into a side inlet or runs along the wall under a bottom inlet; straight valves suit side inlets with pipes running along the wall or bottom inlets with pipes rising from the floor. Measure where the pipe meets the radiator and note whether it rises from the floor, runs along the wall or comes from the wall; a simple photo will make identification easy. Many products on offer, such as the DuraTherm angled and corner options, are clearly labelled by connection type so you can match them directly.

Should you buy a manual valve or a thermostatic radiator valve (TRV)?

A manual valve gives on/off control and is cheaper, while a thermostatic valve automatically regulates room temperature for greater comfort and energy savings. Thermostatic options in the range include Honeywell Valencia and Arroll wooden-head TRVs, and they're a good fit if you want stable room temperature without constant adjustment. If you want simple control for a bathroom towel rail where you run heat manually, a manual cross-head valve such as the DuraTherm or Towelrads chrome option can be perfectly adequate.

Will a 15mm valve fit my radiator, or do you need a different size?

Most stock here is 15mm, so if your radiator pipework and fittings are 15mm you'll have a straightforward match. There are a few 1/2 inch and alternative sizes available, so check the valve connection measurement on your radiator or pipe before ordering. If you have a modern radiator it's very likely to be 15mm, but older systems sometimes use imperial sizes, in which case you should select the included in our range 1/2 inch options.

How do you match valve finishes and head styles to your radiator and bathroom look?

Use finish and head style to create a unified look: chrome and polished nickel suit contemporary bathrooms, while brass or antique finishes and ornate or wooden heads work well with traditional radiators and cast-iron styles. For a modern matte scheme, matt black or anthracite valves from Solaro or DuraTherm pair neatly with black or anthracite radiators. You can also buy matching sleeves and kits (Solaro valves with sleeves) so the visible pipework finish complements the valve.

What is a lockshield, do you need one, and how will you know if it's included?

A lockshield controls and balances the flow through the radiator so heat is even across the system; you generally need one on the opposite side to the valve to set system balance. Some valve sets include a lockshield, while many valve-only options do not, so check the product description; higher-end thermostatic sets such as Arroll and Eastlake bundles commonly include both TRV and lockshield. If you have an existing lockshield on the radiator you may not need another, but if you're replacing both sides look for paired sets to ensure matching finish and function.
